In a typical poker game, players place forced bets (called blinds) before the cards are dealt. This creates an incentive to play the game, as players can win a large pot by having the highest-ranking hand at the end of each betting round. After players have received their two hole cards, the dealer “burns” the top card on the deck and puts it face down out of play. The dealer then reveals the top three cards on the remaining deck, which are placed face up in the middle of the table. Players can then either raise their bet, match the amount of the biggest raise or fold. The players who raise their bets advance to the next betting round, known as the flop.
