Poker is a card game with elements of chance and strategy. There are a lot of rules that must be followed and the game is played with a minimum of two players, usually in groups of four to six people. The goal is to have the strongest hand at the end of a round by raising your bets against other players. A strong hand will force other players to call your raises or fold their hands, resulting in you winning the pot.

The game begins with one or more players placing an initial amount of money into the pot before cards are dealt. These are called forced bets and they come in the form of antes, blinds or bring-ins. The dealer then shuffles the deck and deals the players their cards, starting with the player to their left. Each player may then place a bet in any of three ways:

When betting comes around to you during a hand, you must either call the current bet (or raise it) if you wish to stay in the hand. Alternatively, you can ‘check’ and pass the opportunity to bet on this hand to the next player.

When players have a strong hand, they must reveal it to the rest of the table by showing their cards. This is a mandatory step and the player with the highest hand wins the pot. There are many different strategies for playing poker, and learning them takes time and practice.
